Michael Fauntroy talked about his book, Republicans and the Black Vote, published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. He described the history of the relationship between blacks and the Republican Party, saying that the Republican party had nearly unanimous support among blacks during Reconstruction because of Republicans' progressive civil rights policies. However, the Democratic Party became associated with civil rights in the 20th century, and consequently most blacks now vote for Democrats. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.
